A house that has a roof of tiles
While machines that make some of the building materials are rare, Tumba cooperative members have said they have brick laying and roof tile making machines lying idle.
Tumba Macon’s cooperative Ejo Hazaza is made of Tumba residents in Huye district that do construction related activities.
Brick laying machine and Roof tile making machines were donated by the ministry of local government throughHuye district authorities.
Twagirayezu Valens, Leader of Tumba Macon’s cooperative Ejo Hazaza reveals that these machines were given to them so that they help residents easily get building materials.
“Bricks we make using these machines are expensive because mud and cement are used. While the usual fired bricks cost Rwf30 each, ours could go to Rwf70 per brick. We could not get customers,” says Twagirayezu
On the other hand, the cooperative members thought that using only mud only to make bricks would be wastage of time the usual red bricks would be better than them.
Twagirayezu explains that using roof tiles machine necessitates them to get permission for collecting sand.
“Making roof tiles require sand, cement and water for soaking them in so that they strengthen. We found out that if we are allowed to have a sand mine, it would be easier for us to make tiles near sand and water. However, our roof tiles would cost Rwf120 each than Rwf150 if we buy water and make tiles far from sand mine.”
Although these roof tiles would be expensive compared to the tiles made of mud, Twagirayezu thinks that people can buy them because they are big, durable and look nice on the roof.
When you look at the house with these roof tiles, you mistake them to be the imported iron sheets, Twagirayezu adds.
Cooperative members are still trying to get a permission of having a sand mine so that they put these machines to use. The use or no use of these machines is in the hands of Tumba sector administration.
