Rwanda | Gicumbi: Goat rearing gaining value

It is a very common practice in African countries to keep Goats mostly in rural areas whereby the goat is tied by a rope around the neck and then on the post where it is left to graze so that it does not destroy crops in the gardens, only to be picked latter in the evening.

Goats in Rwanda are continuing to add value as they are much liked for their good roasted meat on chopsticks.
Isidore Gashirabuke a veterinary doctor in Gicumbi district said that goats are continuing to be expensive astime goes by due to their high demand.
The veterinary doctor said the goat rearing does not require a lot of things and it is among the animals that can be afforded by the poor people so that they can develop themselves slowly by slowly.
“In developing countries, goats are used as a starting point for poor people who want to develop themselves”, Gashirabake remarked.
He says that depending on the breed of a goat, it can produce many kids that can be sold latter and bring a good amount of money in to the family. Goat hides can be used to process many different valuable long lasting products.
he continues to explain that goats can easily adapt to any kind of pasture in any place because they feed on very many different types of grass that are not eaten by other animals.
He says people who start by keeping goats easily develop when they know how to take good care of them. That their wastes produce good manure that contains a lot of salts which is a good ingredient for crops compared to other animals.
He said that five years before, one could manage to get a goat at Rwf5,000 but currently a goat can be goat at Rwf10,000 which helps rural people to develop themselves.
