As part of the activities to celebrate achievements it has made as it enters its 12th year of existence, the National Electoral Commission of Rwanda (NEC) has organised an Open Day on March 13, 2012 where the public will be able to visit NEC offices in Kigali.
The Executive Secretary Charles Munyaneza March 05 that the public will visit some departments from where NEC staff will explain to the visitors what they do.
The expected visitors will come from the public, Government civil society, media, development partners, among others.
NEC will at the same time take this opportunity to register those who have never registered to vote especially as the country prepares for next year’s parliamentary elections.
On March, 15 National Electoral Commission (NEC) will have field activities with volunteers. NEC in partnership with volunteers will donate cows to poor households in different districts as way of supporting the One Cow per Family Program (Girinka).
Established in November 2000, NEC has conducted free and fair elections since its establishment. In 2003, NEC presided over a National Referendum on the New Constitution. For the years 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2011, NEC conducted successful Local Government, Parliamentary, Presidential and Senatorial elections respectively, characterized by high voter turn-ups.
Electoral official’s attributes further the positive results to the sustained public education and civic awareness campaigns have ensured that Rwandans participate and own the electoral process.
From the humble beginning NEC has now adopted the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in service delivery by installing an electronic system at the headquarters and upcountry field offices.
The Executive Secretary says the voters’ registers has been computerised and can be accessed online by voters. It contains names, photos and other details of voters, unlike the old system of paper work. The electronic system provides the most convenience alternative for updating data.
