Rwanda Ministry of Disaster Management and Refugee Affairs (MIDMAR) is urging all Rwandans to protect themselves against disasters most especially during rainy season during thunder/lightening, destructive wind and floods.
MIDMAR cited that much as disasters are unpredictable on an individual basis, there are measures to be taken such that lives and property can be saved in case they occur.
The MIDMAR long list of measures to be taken read;
There should be water trenches, and regularly cleaned so that they do not broke water flow.
Houses too should have proper drainage systems with tightened walls strong enough to resist wind not to mention a need to have proper hygienic conditions which are also crucial.
Highland farmers need to use terraces and other soil erosion prevention mechanisms.
Rwandans should endeavor planting of trees mostly on highlands since they protect both soil erosion and heavy winds.
In events of lightning and thunder, people should avoid;
Taking shelter under trees, holding on metallic doors and windows, withhold using electric appliances when one’s house is not properly installed, avoid swimming in natural water bodies, where applicable there is a need to have a lightning conductor
MIDMAR has thus provided a toll free number 170, to be called in case of disaster.
