Kigali joined the rest of the world to mark the world day of the sick on March 4. The day was marked under the theme: “It is important for everybody to care for patients and families with patients suffering from incurable illnesses or disabilities. You and I together can undoubtedly achieve this.”
The Director General of Kigali Central Teaching Hospital (CHUK) Dr. Theobald Hategekimana said that the sick have the right to be told whether they are suffering from a curable or incurable illness, so that they can be aware and assisted to put up with their ill-health.
Hategekimana made the disclosure this Sunday at the function organized by the hospital to mark the World Day of the Sick.
He said that they chose above theme because in the past, their doctors would hesitate to disclose to families of patients or patients themselves, whom they diagnosed with incurable diseases.
This, according to Hategekimana, made some patients remain needlessly in hospital even as they would receive palliative care at their homes. Hategekimana says that it’s every patient’s right to know their diagnosis.
The function was attended by various people who included among others the sick, attendants, and doctors from CHUK.
A patient who spoke on behalf of others, thanked the hospital for improvement in service delivery, a fact he said reassures them of getting better soon. The World Day of the Sick is celebrated every year on the 11th of February.
