Farmers practicing cultivation along the shores of Lake Muhazi reveal that the bamboo trees grown helped reduce soil erosion which had seriously affected them.
The bamboo trees planted along the shores of Lake Muhazi helped reduce soil erosions which would wash away all crops planted in the gardens during the heavy down pours.
One of the farmers along the shores of lake Muhazi Jeanne Mukakamana narrates, “Strong waters would come from the steep slopes surrounding lake Muhazi and wash away all the crops grown in our gardens but now the planted bamboo trees help reduce on the speed of strong waters thus stopping the erosion”.
Not until when they planted the bamboo trees, the gardens would lose the top fertile soils as a result of soil erosion which would pour it in to the lake.
The bamboo trees were planted at the shores of Lake Muhazi and at the boundaries of the gardens as a preventive measure of soil erosion which had become so severe.
Farmers are instructed to grow their crops at least ten meters away from the bamboo trees.
The bamboo trees do not only reduce on the soil erosion but also clean up the rain waters that pour in Lake Muhazi.
The rainy waters that came from the steep slopes would carry a lot of soils but the soils are filtered by the bamboo trees before the rainy waters could be poured in to the lake.
The agricultural officer in Gicumbi district Mr. Jean Chrisostome Nzeyimana said the bamboo trees have roots made in form of threads which filter the soils in the rainy waters from the steep slopes thus making the waters clean before they pour in to the lake.
The agriculture officer said the bamboo trees can serve many purposes other than protecting the gardens from soil erosion.
Bamboo trees make good furniture, decorative pieces, can make a good fence and can even be processed in industries to make animal feeds.
