The Africa Champions League and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) competitioncontinue today, with Rwandan teams taking part in Africa’s biggest club competitions.
APR, defending champions of last year’s Rwandan Premier League will entertain TUSKER FC at Amahoro National Stadium tomorrow in the Champions League, while runners-up KIYOVU FC will be taking on SIMBA today in the CAF Confederation Cup, in a tricky away fixture in Tanzania.
APR, have a slight advantage over TUSKER FC, having drawn 0-0 in the first away leg in Kenya, meaning a win today whichever the margin, will see them through to the next stage. TUSKER FCcoach, Sam Omolo, in an interview with journalists lauded the reception they got on their arrival saying that it was a “warm welcome” they received and that the Rwandan people are friendly. He said, “It was a good welcome when we got here in Kigali. I was first worried because I thought the weather might be hot here. I thought that it would be different from that in Kenya, but it seems there is no difference after all. The weather here is cool for football.” When asked how he thinks thegame will be, bearing in mind that they are playing away, Omolo said, “Nowadays football has changed. It doesn’t matter if you are playing home or away because you can lose or win.” Mr. Omolo also predicted an open game between the two sides saying that the fans should expect an entertaining match. Kick off time is 3.30 pm(CAT) at Amahoro National Stadium
On the other hand, KIYOVU will be looking to frustrate SIMBA FC having played a 1-1 draw here in Kigali, in the first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup. A win for KIYOVU will also see them through to the next stage. Alternatively, a draw of a higher margin than 1-1 will also see them advance on away goals rule.
However, this will not be as easy as it sounds, as many critics have already predicted that KIYOVU will crash out of the competition, mainly because players and fans alike do not have the “passion” to eliminate the Tanzanian powers. These sentiments were echoed by many KIYOVU fans who say lack of proper organization in the club has been the main cause of the problems that the club is currently having. “Imagine a football team like KIYOVU FC missing out on a plane simply because they arrived late for their flight,” one fan was quoted as saying.
Whichever way, there is tight game to look forward to, and the hot Tanzanian weather notwithstanding, KIYOVU will definitely have to prove a point to prove their critics wrong.
