Rwanda | Nyagatare: residents want compensation from Elephant destructions

About 40 elephants escaped from Akagera National Park on the 29th.April.2012 and destroyed crops of people in Ndama and Nyamirama cells in Karangazi sector in Nyagatare district, resulting into residents’ complain to the Government for compensations.
With the support of security levels, the Karangazi sector administration says that they have already taken back these elephants to the park. Emmanuel Murenzi the executive secretary of Karangazi sector said that after the visit by theRwanda Development Board (RDB) with the local authorities to see the crops that were destroyed, they agreed to start on a program of compensate for what was destroyed by these elephants.
Residents who live in this area say that they are concerned that the produce they were expecting to harvest in this season of cultivation will not be got. They want that this problem of animals on loose be solved permanently as it is not the first time it has happened.
Theogene Ruvuzandekwe a resident in this area said that they are worried about where they will get money to back for the fertilisers they had got on a loan.
The sector administration says that the fence around the Akagera National Park is being built but it started on the side of Kayonza district and they believe it will solve this problem permanently.
