In order to improve farming, the use of ploughing machines has been officially launched in Kabaya sector.
Ngororero district and MINAGRI (ministry of agriculture) are behind this program, that took place in residents fields of Rebero village in Ngororero district.
The launching event was led by Mr. Abdoulatif Batouta, Expert in Rwanda Agriculture Board.
Also, present were Mr. Alexis Benimana, in charge of agriculture in Ngororero, Executive secretary of Kabaya sector Patrick Uwihoreye and the residents who had come to learn how machines work.
The purpose of the event was to demonstrate for the residents how ploughing machines work and to give them chance to ask questions concerning modern farming.
Mr. Batouta explained that modern farming is productive in a way that apart from cultivating, this machine that is worth Rwf2.5 million has the capacity to irrigate crops, crop spraying, milling and loading the produce from the field to the intended destination.
While 74 farmers dig one hectare a day using hoes and earn Rwf74.000, a ploughing machine uses seven litres of fuel to dig one hectare of land.
While ploughing saves time and little energy is required compared to using hoes that take energy and time,it solves the problem of insufficient labour farmers have been facing, adds Batouta.
Patrick Uwihoreye, Executive secretary for Kabaya sector encouraged farmers to adopt modern farming which is more beneficial. Members of farmers cooperatives vowed to buy them and use them for the next season
Alexis Benimana revealed to the residents that MINAGRI through Vision finance, has started supporting farmers by giving them loans to buy machines.
Benimana asked farmers to use the machines and increase the productivity, so that social and economic development is achieved.http://umuhinzi.com/2012/05/rwanda-kabaya-modern-farming-replace-manual-labour/
