Rwanda | Ruhango: Taxes to reduce government burden

In a bid to increase taxes and reduce on the government support, a meeting that gathered Ruhango district officials and local leaders was called on May 8th 2012 to revise on the tax.
During the meeting, decisions were reached so as to reduce on the money ministry of finance gives Ruhango district.
Decisions taken include increase on the number of tax officials, giving them allowances, increasing the number of security entities and to mobilize investors in Ruhango district.
Jean Marie Vianey Twahirwa, tax coordinator in Ruhango district says they intend not to depend on government as the government encourages them.

Twahirwa asserts: “We cannot depend on help always, that’s why we have to increase taxes so that the support we get from ministry of finance is reduced.”
During the meeting, Epimaque Twagirumukiza, vice mayor for finance in Ruhango asked executive secretaries to put more effort, in taxing all activities done in their sectors so as taxes are increased.
In its performance contracts, Ruhango district pledged to collect Rwf311 million as taxes and has so far collected Rwf217.
While it is hoped that the amount of money will exceed Rwf311 millions if executive secretaries put more effort on taxing, Ruhango believes to be collecting over Rwf600 million as tax.
