Recipients of the first Skills Development Fund (SDF) grants have been called upon to strengthen the process of matching their training with labour market needs.


The call was made by the Skills Development Program (SDP) Manager Wilson Muyenzi during a tour to evaluate the current status on training and financial utilization by different grantees of the first round of the SDF grants.


Sectors supported through this grant by the World Bank include Carpentry, Automotive Mechanics, Handcraft and Tailoring, Beauty and Esthetics, Building services, Manufacturing, Welding, Agriculture, Hospitality and Tourism.


Grantees visited include CODUSI cooperative/Rusasa VTC (Gakenke district), Nyemeramihigo VTC (Musanze district), Mugusa VTC (Gisagara district) and Rwabuye VTC (Huye district).


Rusasa VTC received a grant of 32 million Rwandan francs. The center has 31 students learning decoration design in masonry, Tailoring and lettering.


“I am encouraged by the level of commitment shown by the visited recipients of SDF grants so far. They are striving to meet their contractual obligations with WDA. Although some challenges still bound, I have no doubt that we shall meet our SDF objectives”, Muyenzi said.


Albertine Nshimiyimana is 20 years old and one of the trainees who commended this support that brought hope for future survival.   Nshimiyimana said


“I dropped out of school and had no hope for self employment not until I joined this training program”,


Seventeen winners of the first round of the SDF grants through support by the World Bank were awarded over 500 million Rwandan francs.


The 17 are;  Mpanda VTC, KarengeraVTC, Ndendezi VTC, Mugusa VTC, ETAG VTC, Inyemeramihigo VTC, Rise to Shine , VISDAPOC, Jill Barham, Rwabuye VTC, Universal Beauty Academy.


Others are; BELASI saloon school, CODUSI cooperative, APEESDE, ASSIST Rwanda, Kayonza VTC and ADENYA.


Nyemeramihigo VTC which was also visited trains 66 students in Automotive Mechanics and Driving after receiving a grant of 26 million Rwandan francs.


Another grantee called Ecole Technique Automobile de Gisenyi (ETAG) which was awarded 43 million Rwandan francs is conducting a three months training in Automotive Mechanics and Electricity with 53 students.


Another batch of 20 winners in the second round of the SDF was recently awarded a total grant worth Rwf718, 601,757 ($1,105,541).


According to the team working under the SDF program, the third round for these grants is expected to be launched in the third week of August 2013.
