First Environment Museum in Africa under construction in Rwanda

Planned Environment Museum


The government of Rwanda has embarked on the project to construct the first ever Environment museum in the western district of Karongi.


The Museum which will help conserve and preserve environment is estimated to cost the government approximately Rwf1.3 billion.


The museum once in place will educate visitors; help them to understand the importance of protecting and safeguarding the environment.


The building will have two floors and a traditional herbal medicine garden with 127 tree species based at the rooftop.


According to Karongi district mayor Bernard Kayumba, the establishment of the museum in the district will provide job opportunities to the local residents and will attract tourists to the district.


John Baptist Safari the director of the environment museum in Karongi district said that this museum is the first of its kind in Africa.


He said the residents will be trained on how to conserve the environment which includes Lake Kivu, and the hill slopes among other things.


The museum will share some of the historical fossils of reptiles from neighboring countries such as Burundi, so as to attract more regional tourism.


The environment museum is the 6th branch of the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda and it is expected to complete by October this year.
