Ever since the president of Rwanda Paul Kagame initiated Girinka Program in 2006, a program that aims at every Rwandan owning a cow starting with the poor as a strategy to eradicate poverty, about 3590 cows have been distributed in Ngororero district.
Ngororero district say these cows have improved the social and economic statuses of the people especially in nutrition, farming especially due to milk and manure.
Though some of the people say cows are given to some and not others depending on who they know in the leadership, the Ngororero district administration say this is totally not true. There is a list of 7000 most poor people than others that were selected by people in the villages that are given priority with all cows given.
Though the district is moving around distributing cows to the people on the most in need list, a people who need cows urgently are given depending on the availability of the cows according to Jean Damascene Abishuka the district’s agriculturist.
Since 2007, 2196 cows were born out of the Girinka program cows, 1216 cows were given back to the people and 183 died due to different diseases according to Jean Damascene Abishuka explanations.
In the last economic year 2012/2013, the district expected to give out 1200 cows to the people but 1613 cows were distributed altogether. 479 cows were in Girinka program, 607 cows from Magirirane social support groups and 527 cows from people to their neighbours.
