Massamba to organize a music workshop

Intore Massamba is set to give a three-day workshop dubbed “Contemplating Traditional Music” at the Goethe Institute. One of the remaining traditional music icons in the country, Massamba is also regarded as the most prolific guardians of Rwanda’s musical world heritage. As he has personally put it, Massamba says that he feels a moral obligation to hand the musical wisdom and skills inherited from his father Athanase down to the next generation.

 

In this workshop, Massamba will teach the essential aspects of Rwandan chanting and music in a workshop for the first time. Among those aspects to be taught are the styles of Rwandan music and their background, the musical components of the traditional wedding, the use of traditional instruments on different occasions in different festivities.

 

According to Massamba, this workshop will encourage young people to love their music even more, thereby maintaining an important part of their identity alive. He concluded, “We have to propagate the true image of a people which has resisted colonization by means of music.” The workshop is set to run from 24^th to 27^th July from 8.30 am to 1pm.
