Rwanda National Police (RNP) revealed on 23/07/2013 during a press conference in Kigali that the National security has improved due to crime rate decrease since the beginning of the year 2013

On his statement, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Emmanuel Gassana said, “The decline in crime level was attributed by the role of the public played in the course of community policing mechanism. We are witnessing a positive behavior change with the community”.

Murder cases have reduced by 19%, i.e. from 230 in 2012 to 188 in 2013. Road accident at 13% i.e. from 5081 in 2012 to 4417, though the problem still eminent this is mainly caused by negligence which accounts 33%, 15% of motorcycles accidents and followed by over-speeding and bad maneuvers.

“We are going to take up strong measures on illicit-drug dealers and users as it was seem as major causes of crime across the country,” IGP Gassana says “ together with the motorcyclists who seem to be more involved on committing crimes especially on gender based violence (GBV) and road accidents”.

The Rwanda National Police also grew well in terms of human resource and professionalism where as police officers were provided with special  training courses on capacity building especially on dealing with crime across the country and other countries that Rwanda has sent its troops for the mission of peace building initiatives worldwide.

Theos Badege Commissioner for Public Relations and Community Policing said, “We cannot achieve our vision without high quality services, accountability, transparency and safeguarding with the rule of law,” adding that to achieve all this we need a strong partnership with the public and media.

On a question raised by KFM Journalist Ange Subiruta asking on the security alongside DRC border wurh Rwanda, IGP Gassana answered by saying , “we are patrolling the border area and we assuring the public to be feel safe and also we are relying on the community living in those areas to update us with any security concern that could arise”
