Rwanda is hosting the Regional Training Workshop on Adaptation to Climate Change, to build and strengthen the capacity in successfully addressing adaptation through the implementation of National Adaptation Programmes of Actions (NAPAs).
The forum, which is taking place from 29th July to 02nd August 2013, In Kigali, brings together over 80 participants from 18 African Anglophone Least Developed Countries.
Speaking at the opening forum the Representative from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Mr.Paul Desanker, said 47 Least Developed Countries have submitted their National Adaptation Programmes and are now actively in the process of implementing tangible adaptation projects through the NAPAs, addressing the urgent and immediate climate change adaptation needs, and benefiting the most vulnerable communities.
Desanker said the workshop will provide an opportunity to get a better understanding about aligning the national development plans and climate change challenges.
“Sharing of best practices from respective contexts will very much add value in this process.”
Rwanda’s Minister of Natural Resources, Ambassador Stanislas Kamanzi said that our Continent continues to face numerous severe negative impacts arising from the adverse effects of climate change.
He added that such impacts are hampering countries efforts to attain development goals including the Millenium development goal (MDGs).
He went on saying that the Least Developed Countries have done what they can do in terms of adaptation and mitigation.
“We, as Least Developed Countries have done what we can do with our limited means, but a lot remains to be done in terms of our adaptation and mitigation endeavors,”he reiterated.
The workshop brings together experts from different countries including Angola, Eritrea, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi as well as Haiti and the United Nations Agencies.
