Vegetable growers in cooperatives still provide fresh vegetables
Epiphanie Uwamariya the chairperson of ‘HIRWA MUHINZI’ cooperative says they thought of forming a cooperative after realizing the scarcity of vegetables in their area especially during the sunny period.
Martha Murere a member of ‘HIRWA MUHINZI’ cooperative says forming a team to work together and grow vegetables has improved their socio-economic statuses and developed their area of residence.
“From the money in the profits of vegetables, I bought a farm and now I have plenty of food for my family as well as for the market” says Murere.
The biggest challenge the cooperative members have is lack of water for irrigation purposes in droughts especially due to the fact that Gatsibo district has few water supplies.
Jean Claude Butera the agriculturist in Gatsibo district says the district can only think about increasing water supply in the district and the farmers will do the remaining.
