Gicumbi Adults’ Schools improving social well being

With the recently established Education program in Rwanda, to teach adults to read and write, the adults in Gicumbi district say the program has changed their social well being for the better.


For Nzabamwita who learnt how to read and write in Rukomo sector Adults School, he is now able to use the knowledge he acquired to manage his home, his agriculture production and to save.

In the farming association Nzabamwita belongs to, he is able to manage it by taking record of their production, to know what belongs to each member and to know of the returns from the profits made by the association.


Liberatha Mukantaganda a 47 years old woman who attended the Adults school in Rukomo sector says learning how to read and write has helped her to do trade and to differentiate cap[ital and profit, income and expenditures and to manage well her home.

“I have learnt how to work instead of depending on my husband. I can get a loan and use it profitably and pay it back having deducted my profit, this is all thanks to the lessons I took in adults’ education” she says.


Dorothe Uwayezu 52 years old says attending adult education has provided her with self confidence, she meets other women, joined association, gets small credits and uses them profitably and pays back on time.


The education officer in Rukomo sector Ms Dancile Mukarugina says the Adults Education has been attended by most of the people in the sector and there are about 13 schools offering this education in this sector.

 Ms Dancile Mukarugina says these schools are mainly attended by women who are able to adapt to changes more than men. In the 13 adult schools in Rukomo sector have about 332 students among which 211 passed the exams and got certificates.
