Reserve forces in Huye district are taught to defend themselves without weapons or sticks because of the nature of their work.
Although their cooperative does other activities, the main purpose of SWICH (Security, Welfare, and Inkeragutabara Cooperative- Huye) is to keep the security of the residents.
In Butare town, reserve forces meet the problem of thugs or drunkards who fight them during patrols. Self defence training was to help them in those situations.
One of the local defense laments: “One of us was recently attacked and beat by waragi drunkards, and he would have died if he did not have self defense techniques.”
Reserve forces of Huye formed SWICH cooperative where they make night patrols and get allowances from residents’ contribution.
