m 5th summit to Rwanda : 5th summit to focus on role of media in the EAC integration
The EABC-EAC media summit which is scheduled to take place in Kigali next week will focus on how the media can play a role in the regional integration.

This was announced by the Head of Corporate Communication and Public Affairs Department at The EAC Secretariat in Arusha Owora Richard Othieno on Wednesday during a press briefing.
According to Othieno, the summit is a great opportunity for the regional media to sit together and discuss on the most pressing issues and the way forward in its development while also pushing the bloc.
The EAC-EABC Media Summit which will take place on August 9 – 10 in Kigali is normally an initiative by the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat and the East African Business Council (EABC) to engage, in an annual forum, Media Moguls/Owners, Chief Executive Officers of Media houses, Media Executives, Publishers, Editors, prominent Media personalities, and the practitioners in the region on integration issues.
Personal attendance of the event by Media Owners, CEOs and Editors is intended to enhance the quality of the discussions and ensure meaningful exchange for all the participants during the Summits.
At the summit, the EAC secretariat will also take opportunity to update the Media Owners, Chief Executive Officers, Media Executives, Publishers, Editors, prominent Media personalities, and the practitioners on the latest developments in the East African regional integration process.
They will discuss their role in promoting the EAC agenda and work out concrete mechanisms for collaboration between the Media industry and EAC and EABC Secretariats.
Meanwhile, as part of the Summit, the East Africa Media Awards winners will also be announced at a gala dinner that will be held on July 9. The Competitions were first held at the 3rd East African Media Summit held in Kampala in 2009.
The Media Awards Competition is designed to recognize and reward bona fide practicing journalists/commentators from all the East African Community Partner States who have committed to objectively report and promote the East African integration agenda.
The Awards are designed to, among others; advance the relationship between the EAC/EABC and the media, who have long been recognized as strategic partners for the Community in achieving its key objective of deepening regional integration.
So far the finalists for the 2nd EAC Media Awards have been announced. A five-member Panel of Judges last Friday selected 12 journalists who are now in line to win the EAC Secretary General’s Award, which is the overall prize.
The same journalists are also in contention for prizes in the Business and Financial (EABC Chairman’s Award); Agriculture and Food Security; Health; Environment; Broadcast; Political; and Higher Education reporting categories. Rwanda has two of the contestants in the competitions.
