Outstanding youth were awarded at the beginning of the savings week

The Southern district of Kamonyi is in a savings week campaign which is targeting the youth of the district.

The week which emphasizes saving among youths has a theme “let us save striving for self reliance”.

The week is characterized by among other activities saving lessons, activities as well as testimonies from young people who have benefited from saving the culture.

“I started saving at Rwf200 every week and now I have capital of about Rwf500 000 that can be invested in any project,” testified Wellars Mbarushimana one of the young people who attended the campaign.

Saving schemes are credited for improving the saving culture among youths in Kamonyi as well facilitating them to acquire loans to invest in their projects.

Statistics show that the number of youths with savings in banks, cooperatives or local financial schemes is increasing tremendously in the district.

“The outcome of saving is not yet visible, but youths are increasingly adapting to the culture,” said Alice Uwera, the vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs.

According to the current saving statistics in Rwanda, 40 per cent save in banks, 32 per cent in associations, financial schemes or cooperatives while only 28 per cent lack savings.

The saving week in Kamonyi was initiated by ‘Akazi Kanoze’,a project that emphasizes saving among youths and is funded by the Catholic Relief Services (CRS).
