Burera to sensitise expectant mothers on safe delivery

Burera to sensitise expectant mothers on safe delivery

Burera district will sensitise women and girls about the importance of giving birth in hospital as the safe way to minimise risks at child birth.

The northern district authorities have set 2014, as the time when all expectant women would receive antenatal care and safe delivery at Healthy facilities.

This goal was included in Burera’s performance contracts for the financial year 2013/2014 and the district is ready to achieve the goal at100 percent.

District authorities say that most expectant mothers in Burera deliver babies without undergoing the recommended 3-4 antenatal checkups while others deliver at home, with no medical help.

This is especially due to long district to Health Centers and lack of knowledge and courage to seek out medical services.

This has affected the lives of both mothers and infants leading to high mortality rate in the district. Burera district has already set a fine of Rwf20, 000 to a mother who delivers a baby without medical help.

This fine has however caused controversy among residents.

“You don’t decide when to expect labour pains yet not all of us have healthy facilities nearby,” says Donatilla Mukamana, a mother.

Samuel Sembagare, the mayor of Burera advises community Healthy workers to keep track on expectant mothers especially when they are due.
