Rwanda’s Prime minister Dr Pierre Damien Habumuremyi has said that Rwanda has set its eyes on boosting the energy sector so as to generation power, but this call needs to involvement of foreign investors.
The premier made the remarks while touring Mazimeru Micro-Hydropower plant in Nyaruguru District, which generates 0.5 MW (500 kilowatts) and was developed by local investors in Muganza sector under the Energie Nyaruguru (Enny) in conjunction with a German enterprise, CARERA.
The Premier and the delegation of local leaders also visited the Nshili I micro hydropower project currently under construction in Busanze sector, Nyaruguru District, which once completed will have the capacity to generate 400 kilowatts.
Habumuremyi commended the residents for coming up with such a creative project which contributes to the national electricity grid as the country is currently developing more power sources.
Other power plants are now under construction in Nyabahanga (Karongi district), NShili (Nyaruguru), Janja (Gakenke), Mukungwa (Musanze), Gashashi (Rutsiro), Nyirabuhombohombo (Nyamasheke) and Rugezi in Burera district.
Juvenal Hakizimana, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of ENNY LTD, revealed that the Mazimeru plant was constructed at a cost of Rwf 1.4 billion, and the group projects that within 5 years, it will have recovered the cost of their investment.
Hakizimana added that the group also plans to put up another plant, which will generate another 450 kilowatts in future and the construction of the new site is expected to start in one year.
The State Minister for Water and Energy, Emma Francoise Isumbingabo, said investing in energy generation is a worthwhile venture since the sector is beneficial both for the investor and the country.
Energy has been one of top priorities of investment and the government, through the National Development Bank has put up incentives for those wishing to invest into energy- such as all imported materials for such projects are exempted from duties.
