Rwanda : PM needs Janja HEP power plant complete by July 2012

During Honorable Prime Minister’s visit to Gakenke district mid May 2012, he instructed all the stakeholders involved in the construction of Janja Hydro Electric Power plant to be complete by July 2012.
Prime Minister Pierre Damien Habumuremyi criticized the slow pace at which the power plant was being constructed at, thus he requested the Chinese company namely MS-Tech in charge of constructing the plant to double their efforts and meet the set deadline.
The PM also called upon state minister in charge of infrastructure Emma Francoise Isumbingabo together with EWSA officials to make a thorough follow up of the visited power plant.
Janja power plant is medium sized and is expected to provide 200KW enough to light about 3000 homes in Janja and Mugunga sectors of Gakenke district. There are plans to supply this same electricity from Janja to few sectors of Nyabihu district like Vunga Sector.

Janja power plant’s delayed construction is partly due to confiscation of the former Sri Lankan construction company’s contract due to failure to meet contractual obligations in the year 2010.
