Rwanda ranked among most improved post conflict countries

 The Mo Ibrahim Governance Index has ranked Rwanda among top five most improved post conflict African countries according to the 2013 Ibrahim Index of African Governance (IIAG). Other countries include: Liberia, Angola, Sierra Leone, and Burundi.

The IIAG report, released on October 14, states that the five countries top the league of the table for most improved performers since 2000 and two countries, Rwanda and Angola had  remarkably shown year-on-year improvement in overall governance, coming from their lowest point in 2000 and reaching their highest peak yet in 2012.

Rwanda was ranked in the 15th position in overall governance, and Angola ranked 39th, out of 52 countries evaluated on the continent.

The top ten performers (Mauritius, Botswana, Cape Verde, South Africa, Seychelles, Namibia, Tunisia and Ghana) maintained their positions while the bottom ten displayed more fluctuation in and out of the grouping. Six countries (Zimbabwe, Equatorial Guinea, Chad, Central African Republic, DRC and Somalia) have constantly remained in the bottom ten in all years between 2000 and 2012.

Rwanda has challenged the IIAG results on Rwanda’s security, participation and rights and officials of the Rwanda Governance Board (RGB) say that the annual report has rather misleading data on Rwanda’s actual security on the ground.

The IIAG scoreboard ranked Rwanda low in the sub-categories national security (49th out of 52) scoring 50.4 percent, participation (46th) with a score of 16.0 and rights (45th) with a 27.5 percent score.

Anastase Shyaka, the RGB chief executive, said that this is wrong and misleading data on Rwanda’s security, participation and rights, and it does not reflect the reality in Rwanda.

Apparently Rwanda has prioritized Security, Good governance and decentralization in its government of unity; and the leaders have been very vigilant on maintain its security internally and externally and fighting corruption and abuse of human rights especially for women and children.

Rwanda was this year ranked by the World Bank, as the best country in doing business in the east African region while the 2012 Gallup research findings ranked Rwanda to be the safest place on the planet – at least in the minds of its residents.
