A group of more than twenty members of Parliament from Kenya are on a study trip to Rwanda specifically at Gahini School in Kayonza district to learn about the implementation and functioning of the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) Program.

Kenya is planning on initiating this program in the next academic year.

Rwanda having introduced this program which is already in its advanced stages of application attracted Members of Parliament from Kenya to come and borrow a leaf.

“This will give us insight in the program when we start implementing it in the country” says Julius K. Melly the deputy director of the education committee in the Kenyan Parliament.

Melly says that he was surprised at how the programme has been rooted in Rwandan children.

“It is inspiring how Rwanda develops the knowledge of ICT in children at a young age. We will definitely take an example of Rwanda to establish this program in the next academic year,” he said.

The Kenyan government plans to invest about Kshs15 Billion in the program according to Melly. Kenya still has a challenge of lack of electricity in many rural areas something Rwanda is already combating.

In the One laptop per Child Program, Rwanda has so far distributed 204, 000 laptops to children in 407 government Schools according to Patrick Mugabo who is in charge of laptop distribution. At least one school in every sector all over the country has this program operating. These laptops are distributed to pupils in Primary four to Primary six.
