Josephine Mukankusi an entrepreneur with new strategies

Josephine Mukankusi a resident of Musanze district has found a new way of making profit from her farming produce and makes more money than the typical farmer.

Mukankusi who produces Irish potatoes sells her produce at a higher price just by washing her produce before selling it.

Mukankusi who did typical farming but could not earn as she expected changed her priorities after attending training on giving more value to crop production. “I decided to produce quality Irish potatoes and wash them before selling them and I make at least Rwf20 profit per kilogram more than other farmers.”

Mukankusi is selective on the type of Irish potatoes she sells. She only gets and cleans well grown and strong Irish potatoes that are normally bought by hotels in Kigali City. “I deal with farmers and buy their produce; they take time and let the Irish potatoes to grow well before harvesting them.”

Mukankusi manages to make about Rwf400 000 monthly, the money she could not make in farming. She does not however enjoy the profits alone because she buys the Irish potatoes on a good price profiting the farmers.

Mukankusi and her partners buy and wash the Irish potatoes manually and pack them according to the sizes for selling.  They only sell the strong and only big ones and the small or those not well grown.

The chosen Irish potatoes are packed in of 5kgs and 10kgs sacks and sold. These Irish potatoes can last 3 months still in good shape.
