Rwanda | Nyamagabe: ADEPR Christians want to change their parish name

The Pentecostal church (ADEPR) in Nyamagabe district said that they want to change the name of their parish from Gikongoro Parish (Ururembo rwa Gikongoro) because the name Gikongoro reminds them of the bad history.

These Christians have already asked the head of Pentecostal churches in Rwanda to change this name because Gikongoro reminds them of their history full of poverty and hunger which is no longer the case.

They also say that biblically, Gikongoro means a disease for crops and for these two reasons they want to change their parish name. Some of these Christians say that they would want their parish to be called after Sumba where the main church is located and others say that they would prefer to be called Maheresho where ADEPR started in south province of Rwanda.

The speaker for Pentecostal churches in Rwanda Pastor Samuel Usabwimana said that they have already received this request but it will first be looked into by the general assembly of the church before a decision is made.

Gikongoro parish combines Pentecostal churches from Nyamagabe and Nyaruguru district and some churches in Huye, Nyanza and Karongi districts. This parish was called after the former Gikongoro district.
