He refused to take it and instead told me to wait for him outside,” Riderman remembers.

The painful memories evoke mixed emotions according to Riderman, but he believes if he had not struggled that much he would not be a star he is today. He continues, “I waited for him till 8pm and when he came out of the studio, he told me to leave the CD at the reception. I almost cried and wondered how I would make it home from Rebero in the middle of the night and on foot!”

But MC Monday, who now goes by the pseudonym Saga Assou has responded angrily, asking Rideman to apologize.

“How dare he? HPI organization partners Rulindo district development programmes particularly in the Girinka program. Girinka program started operating in Rulindo district in 2006 after it was introduced in the country by President Kagame in the same year. Girinka (One Cow per Family) programme is one of Rwanda’s poverty reduction strategies aiming at improving people’s social and economic status. The program is promoted in its condition that whoever gets a cow will give out the first calf to the next neighbour and so on. The cows provide milk for consumption, income earning manure for boosting crop farming. Rulindo district is steadily supporting Girinka program as a strategy of poverty reduction. According to Prosper Murindwa the Vice Mayor for Finance and Economic Affairs in the district, getting a cow shifts individuals from one social level to the next. Cyinzuzi sector residents commended the district support in many programs especially Girinka that has helped in eradicating poverty and poor eating habits. HPI project operates in three sectors namely; Ntarabana, Masoro and Cyinzuzi The project has so far given out 152 cows for promotion of Girinka program to its beneficiaries in the said sectors. This forest nearly got completely depleted due to large scale cattle ranching and refugee resettlement of people who returned to Rwanda from the Democratic Republic of Congo after the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis.

By 2001, only 1500 acres of the original 250,000 remained.

Nyabihu district being hilly and mountainous, there was an increase of landslides and eroding that the area became risky and dangerous.

A view of the cattle ranches in Gishwati Forest

With the effects of environmental degradation becoming so fierce, in 2007, President Kagame and the Great Ape Trust chose Gishwati as the new national park and launched the Gishwati Area Conservation Program (GACP).

The terraces are so productive for crop farming

Permanent strategies to conserve the Gishwati forest were put in place; the area was then divided into 3 parts. One part is for farming, the other is for animal rearing and the 3rd area was to be conserved.

The place for crop farming was made in terraces and crops like Irish potatoes, maize and beans are grown in the terraces. This area is so productive and through the making of terraces, soil erosion has been stopped.

Further, cattle rearing are at the peak in Gishwati. People were evacuated to safer places, the once a dangerous and High Risk Zones of Gishwati are now the most beautiful areas of Nyabihu district.

In 2011, GACP started a tourism program in the forest part of Gishwati, trees have increasingly been planted, and the Trust reports that 20 chimpanzees have been identified in the area.

The Forest now comprises 3,665 acres. executives that exchange and share ideas for career and personal growth in a bid to provide avenue for their members to access finance through venture capital.

The visiting members of YPO, mostly composed of chief executive officers of regional firms, are in the country for a week-long tour to follow up on and assess various projects run by YPO-Rwanda Action Forum (Raf).

During the meeting, five Rwandan entrepreneurs in the ICT sector who are members of the chamber had a chance to pitch their business proposals on ways they are planning to expand their enterprises, most of them seeking funding from the YPO members and others seeking for strategic partnerships to enable them grow.

“We want to create an environment for young people who have ideas to grow, we are looking to link them with experienced and established business people for them to make their ideas realities, more than money, they need mentoring and sound advice,” Patrick Kabagema, the chairperson of the private sector ICT chamber, said while welcoming the executives.

The entreprenuers

Those who pitched their proposal include Clement Uwajeneza, the managing director of AxIS, a software development company that was in 2011 awarded an excellence award as the best ICT company during the Rwanda Development Board Awards.

Uwajeneza is looking to grow his enterprise regionally through sale and installation of a modern tablet enabled point of sale that will ease accountancy and stock management.

By the end of his presentation, Uwajeneza had aroused some of the executives’ interest, some looking to acquire the service and others looking to put money in it.

He is seeking $630,000 (about Rwf422 million) for his project.

Other entrepreneurs who pitched were Jean Niyotwagira, the founder of TORQE, a software development company that is seeking to ease management problems, especially distribution.

Niyotwagira was requesting for $90,000 (about Rwf60 million ) for a percentage of his company.

Gira ICT founder Alphose Ruhigira, whose company makes it possible for customers to purchase ICT equipment through installments via banks and their employers, was looking for an investor to pump in $150,000 (about Rwf100 million) for a share of her company.

Sylvia Umutesi, the founder of Mahwii Ltd that makes it possible for patients to make medical appointments via SMS had options for the investors, either three per cent of the company for $100,000 (about Rwf67 million) or a loan of the same amount repayable in three years to cover the cost of the systems installations around the continent.

<p style='text-align: style='text-align: justify;'>Nicholas Pottier, a software developer who worked in building systems used on Amazon, presented an SMS based platform TextIt to act as clinic reminder for pregnant mothers to bring down the number of women who die of pregnancy related complications, currently at 800 a day worldwide.

Pottier’s presentation stood out in that he required no funding only strategic partnerships.

The last presenter was the founder of Algorithm Inc that develops software for optimal management of business, which so far has presence in Rwanda, Burundi and Canada.

The company’s request was $200,000 (about Rwf134 million) and a committed partner to extend the company in more countries around the region.

The executives in turn wanted to find out the business models employed by the entrepreneurs who were their target markets for the various presentations.

Yariv Cohen, the managing director of Israel-based Ananas Capital, a venture capital firm with a presence in more than 20 countries across the world, said the executives want to be more impactful in the business environment in the country.

“We want to connect strategic investors and people interested in businesses here to come and give value, capital and know how. We are looking for good entrepreneurs in all sectors and be able to support them with our experience,” he said.

Yariv added that Rwandan entrepreneurs stood out in that they had regional ambitions.

“It is rare that we have young entrepreneurs with regional ambitions and a deep understanding of the business environment. To get ahead they will require funding and mentoring for them to keep turning the market needs into solutions. The ICT sector is at a good time as it is being recognised even by neighbours as the place to be.”

RDB lauds YPO

RDB Chief Executive Valentine Rugwabiza said Young Presidents Organisation is impacting on the country’s information and communication technology setting in a way not felt before.

“As the largest group (about 20,000) of CEOs around the world, we are truly feeling the strength of YPO in Rwanda. Spanning from agriculture to entrepreneurship, these CEOs are using business to impact the lives of many Rwandans,” Amb Rugwabiza said.

“We are pleased to see YPO’s engagement in child nutrition, agricultural production and skills development. These are areas that can significantly improve livelihoods of Rwandans,” she added.

Amb. Rugwabiza said there is a shared vision that has been exemplified by the group’s recognition of the country’s efforts through the YPO’s Global Leadership Award that was previously awarded to President Paul Kagame.

“Our discussions today focused on reviewing what YPO has achieved in the past year, as documented in their 2013 year-end report that was handed to President Kagame. We also discussed future opportunities ranging from projects in the energy sector to e-procurement in ICT. We are happy to see the relationship between YPO and Rwanda continue to grow for the benefit of all Rwandans.”

Youth pitch IT projects to potential investorsrwandaexpresshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11881988614613060339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4698625644715265579.post-61459760572143847932013-11-13T21:53:00.001-08:002013-11-13T21:53:09.921-08:00Terror suspect Mutabazi appears in court

Lt. Important messages which can be derived are; that it is not a zero tolerance approach…mistakes can be made since it is a risk based approach,” Nieuwenkamp said.

“It is not a big bang effort; it is a gradual continuous learning effort. It should not lead to embargoes. It is focused on improving the situation on the ground, not simply about cleaning your own hands and leave.”

Understanding mining sector

The Minister for Natural Resources, Stanislas Kamanzi, said the forum will help participants to understand Rwanda’s mining sector better, by interacting with first hand actors in the process of implementing international guidelines, such as the ITSCi Mineral Tagging and Traceability Scheme.

“The participants will grasp successes achieved in due diligence guidelines for tin, tantalum, tungsten and gold, despite the challenges involved–and thus, chart the appropriate way forward,” Kamanzi said.

“They will be able to visit mining sites out of Kigali, where they will see for themselves the strides made in our national mining sector, including in production and carrying out the due diligence process,” he added.

Kigali’s hosting of the conference and the subsequent visits to the mineral sites is expected to help dispel rumours and allegations that Rwanda is involved in illegal mineral trade.

The mining fraternity is eager to contest the charges they face when implementing international guidelines, which they deem to be too expensive and hurting to the local miners.

“These are good guidelines and they help mining companies to work in a better and streamlined way. However, the charges are a real burden; for example, we are charged $200 and $300 per tonne of cassetirite and coltan exported. This money goes to the International Tin Research Institute (ITRI) to support the mineral tagging scheme,” Jean Malic Kalima, the president of Rwanda Mining Association, said.

“We believe that it is too high and particularly affects the local Rwandan artisanal miners. We want to tell OECD and ITRI that this is a burden to us and that they should consider revising these charges,” Kalima said.

Mineral revenue

The sector employs more than 35,000 people and has been growing at a rate of 10 per cent in revenue and volume since 1999, according to statistics from the Ministry of Natural Resources.

The ministry further indicates that about 90 per cent of the country’s surface area is underlain by the Kibaran System Rocks, which are known to be mineralised wherever they have occurred, such as in Uganda, Tanzania, Burundi, DR Congo and Angola.

Rwanda’s mineral volumes and revenues last year stood at 8,000 tonnes and $136.6 million (about Rwf86.7 billion).

The government plans to increase the figures to 18,000 tonnes and $400 million (about Rwf268 billion) by 2017.

Kigali summit focuses on ‘conflict minerals’rwandaexpresshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11881988614613060339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4698625644715265579.post-81273162949164290312013-11-13T21:34:00.001-08:002013-11-13T21:34:02.688-08:00Global young business leaders in investment drive

President Paul Kagame (C) poses for a photo with members of the Young Presidents’ Organization yesterday.

The Young Presidents’ Organisation (YPO) has pledged to increase their investment in the country as well as help attract foreign direct investments from its members.

The organisation’s representatives made the remarks shortly after meeting President Paul Kagame at Village Urugwiro, yesterday.

An eleven-member YPO delegation is in the country for a week to follow up and assess the various projects run by YPO-Rwanda Action Forum (Raf).

“YPO members are engaged in various projects in Rwanda, especially in the areas of agriculture, and ICT. The church now has 2,835 learning facilities, which supplement the government-owned ones.

But there are challenges still. 35-year-old Bernard Twiringiyimana says some illiterate people still don’t have the courage to go to school to learn how to read, write and count because of an apparent illiteracy stigma.

MINEDUC targets four adult learning centers per cell by 2015rwandaexpresshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11881988614613060339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4698625644715265579.post-66271848789303244462013-11-13T05:43:00.001-08:002013-11-13T05:43:16.601-08:00Rwandan students sensitized on EAC integration benefits

Students from universities and higher learning institutes in Rwanda have been tipped on the benefits East African Community (EAC) integration.

According to a capacity-building expert Wanyama Masinde, a number of people from the five EAC partner states (Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya) have not yet understood the benefits of EAC integration and still cling to their respective countries.

In a public lecture at the Kigali Institute of Management (KIM), Wanyama told students that since independence, African countries have always considered a united continent a key to development.

He said that the major challenge towards benefiting from integration is the fact that African leaders rushed to having integration blocks ahead of communities’ understanding of the whole concept.

“In the past countries merged their borders prior to identifying the opportunities that would come along with the merging of frontiers, simply because of little knowledge and a few means based on mindset,” expressed Wanyama,

He called on students to aid mindset change for the region, with a message that all people in the region would benefit from the EAC integration without discrimination.

Augustine Karangwa, a students’ representative at Kigali Institute of Management {KIM}, said the training helped students with mindset change.

Karangwa said that following the increasing number of university graduates in Rwanda, EAC is an ideal job market.

Rwandan students sensitized on EAC integration benefitsrwandaexpresshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11881988614613060339noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4698625644715265579.post-44099566850329203642013-11-13T05:29:00.001-08:002013-11-13T05:29:02.014-08:00As Kigali Eye Mukura Scalps

AS Kigali team

TKFL, Tuesday

AS Kigali vs Mukura (Stade de Kigali)

Musanze vs APR (Musanze)

SC Kiyovu vs Police (Mumena)

Etincelles vs Rayon Sports (Umuganda)

AS Muhanga vs Marines (Muhanga)

LEADERS AS Kigali looks to extend its lead at the top of the Turbo King Football League when they face Mukura in the ninth round of the season at Stade de Kigali on Tuesday.

Unbeaten in the past six matches, Coach Andre Gasambungo will all be out to register another win for his youthful side which has been in good form since the season started.

They have lost once and won seven matches consecutively and AS Kigali seems not to be in any stand of losing any point again.

“The team has picked up the league rhythm and we are set for our next assignment against Mukura. It is a good squad and though they have struggled this season, we will not underestimate them,

“We will give them the respect they deserve as we seek to win the game,” added Gasambungo.

Coach Cedric Kaze has seen Mukura struggle to make any impression in as far as the league is concerned. Standing ninth with nine points, Mukura has won three matches and lost five.

However, Kaze believe his team will bounce back after losing three consecutive league matches just in a space of 14 days. “Lack of concentration and inability to score goals despite creating many opportunities has been our sole problem,”

“We have to pick up ourselves and prepare for the next match. I believe we can work hard and be able to start picking points in the enxt matches,” said Kaze.

Kaze’s side lost 2-1 at home to Police on Saturday, which followed narrow identical 1-0 defeats to APR and Rayon Sports respectively ahead of the AS Kigali crucial tie.

Mukura, who finished fourth last season, are aiming at winning this season’s title but if they are to achieve their targets, they will need to win more than they lose or draw.

Yossa Betrand Ngandjeu is expected to sit out this match due to suspension.

In other matches due this afternoon, defending champions Rayon Sports plays away to Etincelles at Umuganda stadium. Both sides go into today’s game nursing a loss in their last fixture. Rayon Sports lost 1-0 to APR while Etincelles succumbed to a 0-2 loss to Gicumbi.

Both sides will miss services of their key players; Cedric Amissi and Isiaka Nahimana who are out with two accumulated yellow cards.

Another tight match today will pit SC Kiyovu against Police at Mumena turf. Coach Gilbert Kanyankole’s old giants have been in good form and are ranked fifth with 15 points, a point better than Sam Ssimbwa’s side while AS Muhanga hosts Marines in Muhanga.

A battle between the second and third will be hosted in Musanze as APR seeks to garner maximum points away to Musanze without skipper Ismail Nshutiyamagara whp is suspended for today’s clash.

Meanwhile, two matches which were expected to pit Amagaju against Gicumbi and Espoir against Esperance have been postponed to Saturday.

As Kigali Eye Mukura Scalpsrwandaexpresshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11881988614613060339noreply@blogger.com0
