Alphonse Ngarambe, a health worker in Kayonza district has disclosed that 80 percent of diseases dealt with in Kayonza health centres are a result of poor hygiene.
A worker in the health department at Kayonza district Alphonse Ngarambe has said that 80 percent of patients suffer from round worms, and amoeba, diseases caused by poor hygiene.
According to him, suffering from round worms emanates from poor hygiene especially residents that do not mind cleaning their toilets which attract flies everywhere in addition to throwing garbage everywhere.
According to the records of Mukarange health centre, roundworm was the most treated disease between June 2010 and July 2011.
The records have showed that over 895 children less than 14 years had roundworms, 660 girls and women above 15 years and 567 men above 15 years of age.
Apart from round worms, amoeba, malaria and diarrhea affected many residents according to the report.
Data manager at Mukarange health centre confirms that roundworm is still the most treated disease in this district according to the report of 2010, 2011 and 2012 although the year has just begun.
Apart from poor hygiene in some residents homes, bars also is another source of poor hygiene especially where meat is roasted from as confirmed by people who go to bars.
An official in charge of health in Kayonza district adds that lack of enough water is among the things that contribute to poor hygiene but he hopes the problem will be solved after water projects in this district are implemented.
