Famous Kenyan judge at Tusker Project Fame Ian Mbugua has called on Rwandan musicians to step up their game if they are to face the challenge of their East African counterparts in the forthcoming sixth edition of the talent search competition. Ian was speaking after the Kigali auditions at Sports View Hotel, where a total of eight contestants were chosen, with a target of only three to head to the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
He said, “What I have seen is that there is talent here yes, but then Rwandan musicians need to be extra aggressive. Believe me it won’t be easy in Nairobi with those Ugandans and Kenyans out there.” Already there have been heated debates as to whether the likes of Elion Victory should be allowed to participate as TPF is solely intended for non-established musicians. But Ian Mbugua sees nothing wrong with it, saying they have not reached that level of stardom that would bar them from taking part.
Meanwhile another favorite candidate Patrick Nyamitali has pleaded to be given a chance to be among the top three to represent Rwanda, saying that he has what it takes to carry the country’s flag high. He told the media, “If I am chosen I would be a good ambassador to the country, and I know I will.” Nyamitali is one of the most established musicians in the country, having started slowly as a gospel singer before going secular. It’s not clear whether he has not achieved that stardom level that Ian talked about.
