Rwanda’s medal hopeful at the ongoing London Paralympics Games, Hermas Muvunyi posted a season best 1:58.18 in the men’s 800m T46 category yesterday morning to qualify for the final tomorrow night.
Muvunyi came into this race with the main aim of making the final despite the presence of strong African competition from Tunisia’s Mohammed Fouzai and Stanley Cheruiyot of Kenya who eventually finished in first and third position respectively in Heat 2.
A sigh of relief could be seen on Muvunyi’s face after confirming that he had qualified for the final but he knows too well that the battle has just began.
Qualifying for the men’s 400m T46 category final on Tuesday morning with a new Paralympic and African record was the realisation of a dream-to finally seek a medal for Rwanda but as fate would have it Muvunyi finished fifth in the final.
National athletics head coach Eric Kasasira believes that Muvunyi can still achieve his dream come tomorrow’s race and that he has so far overcome the strain after Tuesday’s race in fact it has made him stronger.
Muvunyi will be trying to add to Rwanda’s medal tally at the prestigious games with the only one being Jean de Dieu Nkundareba’s bronze at the 2004 Athens Games in the same event.
