John Mugabo, mayor of Kayonza District
Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) has compensated farmers in drought affected sectors of Kayonza District with 30 tons of yielding bean seeds.
Scorching sunrays hit Rwinkwavu, Kabare, Murama and Kabarondo sectors and ruined maize plantations, according to John Mugabo; the Kayonza District Mayor.
Mayor Mugabo adds that it was worth repaying the farmers who had put in much effort to grow maize only for the sun to dry the crops.
“RAB saw it beneficial to compensate farmers with new yielding bean seeds.” He said
The RAB help came after residents reported fear of hunger due to persistent drought. Residents revealed it was on November 9th 2013 during the community work to grow beans in Kayonza district.
The mayor said they are optimistic that the beans will yield; adding residents are luck as has started raining.
Like other residents, Kazungu; a resident of Murama sector in Kayonza district commended the government for giving them another type of beans.
Apart from the affected sectors, the entire population of Kayonza district had worries over increased food prices in the market.
