Fishing activities on Lake Kivu will resume on the 19th, 11 , 2013 after a two month ban. Stopping fishing activities for at least two months in a year was initiated in 2011, as means against poaching. The program improved the quality and quantity of fish since fish are left to grow fully.

Restricting the Lake from fishing activities for a period as well increases the quantity of yields.
Since the program was employed, fishermen graduated from a usual 15 kilograms to a catch between 30-50 kilograms of fish.
