Bugesera: Pupils blame poor grades on lack of lunch

Nyirarukobwa Primary School pupils in Bugesera district have said that lack of lunch at the school is the cause of poor performance in class and poor time management and have requested the school leadership to provide lunch.

The pupils say that they spend most of their lunch break trekking to and from their far-away homes for lunch which exhausts them and hinders them from respecting time as well as concentrating in class.

Some students confessed to finding no lunch back home because the parents are still working in their farms by the time they get home.

The journey to and from home is approximately 2 hours for most students who attend Nyirakobwa primary school.

The school head teacher Antoinette Yankurije said says that lack of lunch for the pupils is a big setback for the school.

“Previously, World Food Programme provided lunch packs but now, the organization has diverted to other projects.

“An organization needs to come to the students’ rescue and provide lunch, before the problem becomes worse,” said Yankurije.

The school has about 805 pupils and has been existent for the past 34 years.
