Jerome Gasana speaks to
Gaculiro Vocational Training Centre (in Gasabo district) is now hosting 51 students studying Culinary Art and food processing under the Adolescent Girls Initiative (AGI), a component operating under the Workforce Development Authority (WDA).
Twenty three (23) are studying Culinary Art and 28 Food Processing, a program they started early June 2013.
The Director General of WDA Jerome Gasana made a tour at the center to see the progress especially on training equipment for the beneficiaries.
Angelique Akimana 22, one of the trainees in Food Processing says the future is bright after this course, basing on different skills she has acquired so far.
“All my past experience in life has been characterized by the lack of basic needs but I now have much in shaping my destiny using the knowledge and skills acquired here”, Said Akimana.
This group is among the 675 adolescent girls and young women in nine training centers. The nine centers are located in the districts of Rulindo, Gasabo, Gicumbi and Kicukiro.
Generally in all the nine centers this training covers 12 months in areas related to Culinary Art, Food Processing, Agri-business, Art and Crafts.
Most of the beneficiaries are vulnerable girls and young women who have not been able to support their needs. The ultimate goal is to make them self reliant through job creation.
The economic empowerment of adolescent girls and young women project is a new program supported by a Multi-Donor Trust Fund for adolescent girls and implemented by the Government of Rwanda through the Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion, the Workforce Development Authority, and the Imbuto Foundation.
School managers and cashiers in the nine AGI centers are supporting this project in creating employment opportunities and supporting incomes of 2700 disadvantaged young women and girls (aged 15-24 years).
