Opened the laboratory: Minister of Health, Agnes Binagwaho
The Ministry of Health has inaugurated a PhD and Masters of Philosophy (MPHIL) Laboratory at the National University of Rwanda’s School of Public Health.
The facility worth seven million Rwandan francs was officially opened by the Minister of Health, Honorable Agnes Binagwaho together with the Country Director of Partners, Dr. Peter Drobac and the Director of the School of Public Health Prof. Jean Baptiste Kakoma.
The philosophy laboratory is a result of the health school’s steadfast commitment to building research capacity among health professionals, in order to increase the volume of Rwandan-driven health research.
The Health Minister, Dr. Agnes Binagwaho noted that the future of Rwanda’s healthcare advancement needs implementing experts to become academics and researchers.
“As our leaders pursue higher degrees to advance their work and the health of our nation, their time becomes more precious and limited. This laboratory will give all students the space needed to focus on the important work of conducting and disseminating world-class research,” the Hon. Minister said.
According to Dr. Drobac, the lab will facilitate Rwanda’s healthcare leaders to better understand the issues affecting the nation’s population through research and use this knowledge base as a catalyst for population health improvement.
The Director of the School of Public Health, Prof. Jean Baptiste Kakoma said that the laboratory will serve as a designated space for PhD and MPHIL students to engage in peer-supported learning.
“The laboratory will provide a productivity-driven and quiet environment in which students can focus on their research activities. The space is specifically reserved for students engaged in the PHD and MPHIL programs, the only research-based degrees offered at school,” he said.
Minister Binagwaho encouraged all of the PhD and MPHIL students to recognize the true opportunity that this laboratory creates.
The NURSPH was founded in 2000 with the aim of contributing to a healthy and productive population, through teaching, research, community services, and consultancy.
