Youth match in peaceful demonstration against gender-based violence
Bugesera district has commenced a week of fighting gender based violence to enable residents participate in the struggle against this violence.
This week is meant to begin sensitization in all sectors of Bugesera district so that residents participate in designing measures to avert gender-based violence.
“This is just the beginning of making residents embrace and be part of the fight,” explains Julius Rukundo; vice mayor for economic affairs in Bugesera district.
“This campaign started in Nyamata district at district level but will extend to other sectors of the district,” the vice-mayor adds.
Participants of the demonstration were briefed on the types of gender based violence and its impact on the Rwandan society currently.
Yvonne Nyirimana, a participant says that all residents should participate in unveiling injustices made to children and parents.
“I have learnt a lot especially through plays that portrayed how parents commit injustice to their disabled children and how spouses violate their partners’ rights on inheritance,” she adds.
Sensitization that includes peaceful marches will entail different talks, where the national police will be explaining on the gender based violence and devising means together with residents to prevent it.
Gender-based violence fighting week gathered secondary school youths, teachers and other residents that marched from Nyamata town to Bugesera youth centre.
