Rwanda : APR pulls of Africa women’s volleyball club championships

Last year’s national league runners-up APR have pulled out of this year’s Africa women’s club championships that commenced on Thursday at Kasarani and Africa Nazarene University gymnasiums in Nairobi.

APR women’s volleyball team needed RwF19m ($32, 000) to help them compete in the championship and has since pulled out because they could not raise a single penny.

The specified budget was expected to cater for food, accommodation, travel fees and allowances for the women’s outfit while in Nairobi.

The army side last participated at this annual tournament in 2010 in Mauritius where they finished in eighth position.

“We are so disappointed that we shall not make the trip because we have been preparing for this tournament since January and for sure we wanted to finish among the top four sides,” said an upset Patrick Sibomana, head coach of APR.

It is also reported that APR’s volleyball team budget was suffocated by the return leg fixture of the football side that travelled to Tunisia last month to play against Etoile du Sahel in the first round of the CAF Champions League. APR lost 3-2 to the hosts.

The APR men’s volleyball team also travelled to Tunisia last month for the Men Africa club championships hosted by Etoile du Sahel where they finished tenth after losing to Kenya’s General Service Unit (GSU) in the 9-10th playoff.

The army side had earlier reinforced their side with new signings from league champions Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA) including Claudette Muhongerwa and seasoned volleyball player also Kenya’s all time dependable Dorcas Ndasaba.
