The United Kingdom (UK) Government and the Ministry of Education have launched a fund dubbed ‘Innovation for Education which aims at improving the quality of education in Rwanda.

The fund will financially support Civil Society and Private Sector to pilot innovative projects with the potential to be adopted by the Government of Rwanda and implemented country-wide.
According to the fund’s Grants Manager Mott MacDonald projects to compete for funding should focus on one or more thematic areas such as; accountability and empowerment, inclusive education, climate change and environment, and use of appropriate technologies in education.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Education Vincent Biruta said that Rwanda is strongly committed to quality education.
“We therefore, welcome this initiative as one route to achieving a step-change in the sector,” said Biruta.
He further said that Rwanda being the first to partner with DFID in this area is another international recognition of Rwanda’s ability to embrace new ideas and learn from them.
Currently, Rwanda’s education system faces many challenges ranging from school drop-out and repetition rates to the need to bridge an estimated 40 percent skills gap in the well qualified graduates that Rwanda needs to produce economic growth.
DFID Rwanda’s head of office Mike Hammond highlighted that innovation for education rests largely with the civil society and private sector organizations that will pilot new ideas.
“Grantees will be invited to take to test out new technologies, to tackle the impact of climate change and to make education more inclusive. The projects funded will be wide ranging. But they come together under one banner, to improve the quality of education in Rwanda,” said Hammond.
According to DFI, funding for the successful applicants will be between 50, 000 and 800, 000 British Pounds and will last for a period of two years.
