SIX-TIME league champions Rayon Sport had their hopes of winning a double this season blown off following a 1-2 loss to second division outfit Bugesera in the 1/16th round of the Peace Cup against Malaria yesterday at Amahoro stadium.
The giants who went into the game as favourites got a shock of the season as they went down 2-0 by half time with superb goals scored by Innocent Gasisi and Michel Ndahinduka.
Even after recess, Bugesera continued to dominate the proceedings. Striker Kambale Salita snatched a consolation goal and this forced Bugesera to mount a solid defense in a bid to stop the blues from getting an equaliser.
Over the weekend, Bugesera boosted their hopes of securing a promotion to the top flight division after humbling Intare 9-0, a result that increased their grip on top spot in Pool B.
In other matches played on Wednesday, APR struck four times to send Kirehe out of the competition with a double from Isaac Muganza, Maxime Sekamana and Eric Nsabimana.
AS Kigali also booked a place in the last eight with a 3-1 win over Espoir at Stade de Kigali.
Three matches are on card today as clubs seek to claim the proposed winner’s cash prize worth Rwf10m. Runners-up will get Rwf7m, Rwf5m and Rwf3m respectively courtesy of Imbuto Foundation.
