The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has urged head teachers in Gasabo District to take tight measures to combat drug abuse in schools.
The police made the call on Friday during a one-day briefing held in Rugando, Kimihurura Sector with the top teachers from across Gasabo.
The school representatives were drawn from 170 primary and secondary schools in the district.
“You are responsible to guide, prepare and turn children into good citizens and leaders of tomorrow,” the Director of Community Policing with the RNP, Superintendent Sam Rumanzi, told the head teachers.
“Fighting drug abuse shouldn’t be left to police alone. As teachers and mentors, it is also your responsibility to take care of your students,” Rumanzi highlighted.
According to Rumanzi, combating drugs doesn’t have to be seen as requiring enormous resources but as a priority among any other national issues.
“If initiatives such as one cow per family, eradicating grass-thatched houses were successful, which required many resources, why can it not be the same in protecting our children?” he wondered. Marie Louise Uwimana, Gasabo vice mayor in charge of social affairs urged, attendees to share drug related information with security organs on time to ensure that the vice is uprooted for good.
“I am very grateful to the Police because they never stop fighting drug abuse in schools,” Uwimana said.
