Several Kigali streets and houses were on Friday given new names and numbers, respectively, which, according to officials, aims at not only guiding people but also modernising and making the city smarter.

Fidel Ndayisaba, the City Mayor, said it will be easier to guide visitors in the city and will cost over Rwf 976 million.

“The project started long ago and has been hampered by many things, but it is now about to be completed,” he noted.

Ndayisaba added that the project was restarted in November 2010 by the Ministry of Infrastructure but was handed over to the City of Kigali in May 2011.

“We did not change the ancient street naming system as people think but the intent is to have a modern and smart city wherein people can easily recognise where to go,” he declared.

The Mayor said each district has its own code and naming: Nyarugenge District is KN (Kigali Nyarugenge) number of the street  and category (Rd, Av, St) Gasabo District is KG (Kigali Gasabo) and Kicukiro District is KK (Kigali Kicukiro) .

The house numbering will take four months and will see over 26,000 houses and buildings allotted with numbers.

The Minister of Infrastructure Silas Lwakabamba said the new mode of naming is good as it is neutral and does not involve people’s names.

“It was very difficult to guide someone, but with the new street names, people may guide themselves easily,” Lwakabamba noted.

Ndayisaba said houses closer to the roads are the first beneficiaries.

For each house to be installed with a number, property owners will be required to pay Rwf12,000.

Ndayisaba indicated the city is presently negotiating with Google to link the new address system to the Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation system and was optimistic that the outcome of the negotiation will be announced soon.
