Rwanda : Rwanda Trading – promoting thousand hills coffee

Rwanda Trading Company is a US-based company which came into Rwanda coffee processing business three years ago as a major competitor that actually broke the monopoly of Rwanda Export (Rwandex) – the largest coffee processor which existed in the country.

The coffee processing factory was opened in 2010 and deals in coffee processing and exportation and a little bit of roasting and selling locally.  The factory is located in Gikondo industrial area in the former Rwandex factory.

The company exports Rwanda coffee to major buyers in the US and Europe and it operates with Coffee roasting giant Westrock Coffee who purchase massive quantities of dry Rwandan coffee to be shipped to the US state of Arkansas for roasting.

The decision of Westrock Coffee to start importing Rwanda dry coffee for roasting follows the acquisition of a new larger roasting facility in Arkansas

As a competitor, Rwanda Trading managed to ‘throw’ Rwandex out of competition since the company was already facing internal administration problems and eventually redeemed bankrupt due to major losses in the sector and failing to pay off the debts owed to the farmers.

Rwanda Trading Company bought loss-making Rwandex at US$2.3million and has since pumped in $7million for expansion. The company was exporting about 6,000 tonnes of ordinary – with revenues of up to $10 million annually.

Today Rwanda Trading is considered as the best coffee processing plant in Rwanda alongside others competitors like Rwacof and CBC– who have improved the export of coffee to foreign markets and bringing more income to the 400.000 local coffee farmers.

The company has an annual export capacity of 4000tons and possesses a range of special machinery for hauling, drying, grading (by size, weight and color) and other loading machinery used. The company also employs over 85 permanent staff and over 250 casual laborers  who are recruited during the off season.

Rwanda trading works with farmers through agents who buy the coffee from the farmers, this coffee is either sold directly or bought and processed. With the coming of coffee washing plants, farmers can actually sell the coffee directly to Rwanda trading- who however have to process the coffee so that it is ready for export.

The Managing Director of Rwanda Trading Company, Matt Smith, say that company was motivated to enter the market because there was not a lot of industries processing coffee in Rwanda, so they decided to enter the market to compete with the existing companies, not to reduce the prices but to raise incomes of farmers and subsequently make a good profit for business.

Smith says that the greatest impact made by Rwanda Trading, in the coffee sector, is that there has been a favorably competition which has apparently increased the percentage of export value that stays with the farmers,  as opposed to going to the exporter in terms of incomes for the local farmers in Rwanda, unlike in the past.

“The world market prices go up and down, but the difference is the impact we have made- that is- our profit margin is below 15 percent every year, as compared to 25 percent in the past- which means the 10% remains with the farmers instead of exporter” Smith says “we have no problem surviving with the 15 percent margin instead of a bigger margin which goes to our competitors”

The prices of a kilo of coffee on the world market keep fluctuating between $3 to 6 dollars US dollars and on average the farmer makes to Rwf294 per kilo of coffee cherry(as per 2010, thus the farmers margin is estimated at 350% because they invest about Rwf80 per kilo, Smith explains.

The production and export for Rwanda trading company has been changing slightly and steadily and exports have been increasing every two years with a little margin. However, Smith says that Rwanda could double its exports in two years by farmers not planting more trees but taking care on the trees and just work on the trees.

He notes that the coffee sector can earn more than 100million US dollars in extra income, and this can reach 200million dollars target and beat the Rwanda tourism sector(which is the highest foreign earner), if only the farmers could be trained on simple farming practices such as mulching and pruning.

“This is not an easy task to train all the 4000 farmers but it is worthy trying and a lot of focus put in agronomy training that would help Rwanda’s exports out a lot. I mean in two years we could be reaching tourism up in two years if we double the coffee by maintaining the trees” Smith says.

Apparently Smith says that the company is doing well as a foreign group in the sector and after three years the company has grown quickly because of honest business in Rwanda. However, the company has to be relocated among the factories to be moved to the new industrial area in Gasabo district (Kigali Special Economic Zone -KSEZ).

The only problem is that his company still is being referred to as Rwandex- a name that has stuck in the minds of the local residents since the factory is located at a bus stop commonly known by the former company-Rwandex.

Meanwhile, coffee has always been one of Rwanda’s all time cash crops and Rwanda Trading Company seems to know this pretty well. The company has developed coffee production and trade right from the grassroots. They believe in helping farmers realize their dreams through earning what’s worth of their production. Rwanda : Inyange Industries- Rwanda’s leading milk plant

Inyange Industries is a leading food processing company in Rwanda, manufacturing a variety of products under the brand name – “Inyange”. The “Inyange” brand has been in use since 1997. This statement was made by Eugene Mukama the Supply chain manager at Inyange Industries while commenting on the community’s reception of the first milk dispensers which were launched inKigali on 31st May 2012.

The dispensers are only in Kigali and the plant plans on lauching the machines through the 30 districts of Rwanda. In Kigali city, the vending machines are strategically located at: City Plaza (Quartier Mateus), Kigali City Market, and Kisimenti (Ndoli’s Supermarket).

At the 100 RWF price point, consumers simply insert coins to purchase their desired quantity of cold, pasteurized milk, and carry it away using their own containers. Some of the distributors have gone a step further by providing disposable cups at their customer’s convenience, making Inyange’s dispensed milk an instant drink and the perfect meal companion.

One of the consumers, Aimable Nteziryayo said that the milk prices are cheaper and vending machines have changed life and one can easily access milk at convenience. He said that milk subsidizes on his expenditure on food and can pick whenever he is at work.

However, some clients have asked Inyange industries to assign a permanent attendant who would help clients use the machines, deal with technical issues when machines jam, and make sure that the sachets do not run out of stock when there is a big number of consumers in a day.

The certificate was presented by officials of Bureau Veritas- which operates in more than 100 countries, and is part of the ISO Technical Committee, TC34/SC17 (Management Systems for Food safety) that helps every player in the food supply chain to meet the highest standards of quality, health, safety and environmental compliance.

The International Food Safety Management Standard, ISO 22000:2005, defines a set of general food safety requirements that apply to all organizations in the food manufacturing industry.

Rwanda : Rwanda Industries, a monopoly with quality services

Rwanda Industries Limited, is one the manufacturing factories in Rwanda. It is a company which produces two products- plastic line (jerrycans) and retreads (of old and used tires) and in the latter product, the company is a monopoly producer in Rwanda.

The jerrycans are produced from petroleum bi- products raw materials imported from the indenters based in Kenya and Uganda – who act as agents for procuring the raw material from oil producing countries such as those in the Gulf.

For the tire retreading, the raw materials (old tires) are collected from within the local market. The company uses specialized technology and skilled labor to produce these products.

The factory is owned by Nittin Dabholkar, an Indian investor – who is also the company’s Director General. Like many factories, it is located in Gikondo industrial area (commonly known as Cartier Industriel), along the Rwandex-Sonatube road in Kicukiro district in Kigali city.

Started in November 2003 and production commenced in May 2004, but the company initially the company started as a plant for re-trading of tires (remolding) and later on added the jerrycan production section.

“We realized there was a big demand for the jerrycans in Rwanda and chose to include the plastics line in our production,” says Nittin.

Nittin says that though the company is a monopoly in the tire retread business, there is a lot of competition in the jerrycan business because of four reasons: the margin of production, operations (cost of electricity is high) and cost of production is generally is very high especially in the jerrycan section.

“Generally we are not really happy with the plastics line, but with the retreads though we are a monopoly, we provide world standards and treat our clients as king; keeping in mind that any day a new competitor can come in to the market, thus we try to keep the clients close and make sure our clients are satisfied with the quality of our products and services,” Nittin says.

In the retreading section, the company collects old used tires and put new rub on it. This takes about eight hours to make one tire, with an average of 16 tires a day- which cost between Rwf50, 000 to Rwf120, 000.

For the jerrycan production, the company uses a three shift per day and is able to produce about 900 jerrycans a day. The jerricans are produces from petroleum bi-products-called high density polyethylene granules- which are petroleum based. These are powered into the hop on a blow mould machine- and one jerrican is produced within 9 minutes.

Each jerrycan Rwf1700 inclusive of VAT- these are not sold to individual retailers, but are supplied to other company’s who are end users- such companies include: packing industries (paint and paraffin, fuel companies) on wholesale basis.

The best aspect about this company is that it employs workers without any basis of prior skills, and trains the staff- which takes a period as long as two weeks, depending on the fast learning skills of one.

The company has at least 19 permanent workers who are recruited and trained with skills to operate the machines and also employs seasonal casual laborers who are hired depending on the workloads.  The same production staff is used in both sections of the production chain.

“The qualifications is one must be are one is jobless and energetic and has basic notions of following up with working schedule.

The future of the company, according to Nittin, depends on the incentives provided by the government, especially in terms of taxation because “any manufacturing unit in the country is getting burdened by high taxation and high costs of inputs. The units cannot survive if it is has to import its raw materials and at the same time compete in the regional market because other countries have access to the raw materials and bigger advantages and don’t have to pay for transportation of raw material”

Nittin says that government must find incentives on costs of importation. For example in order to transport a container of raw materials he has to pay 6000US dollars, while the re-trader in Kenya only pays 200 US dollars, which means he incurs a minus of  6000 US dollars for every container imported and in a year he earns a little higher than that.

He also advises that the government should focus a lot on education input on technical skills because there is lack of skilled labor in Rwanda, which makes it hard to employ local residents since most graduates have only theoretical skills.

Rwanda Industries will also be one of the companies to shift from the current industrial area- and he says that the shifting should ensure that the necessary infrastructure. However, despite the challenges of producing at high cost and facing a competitive regional market, Nittin says that Rwanda still stands out as a better place to do business because of the good and effective policies by governments which have created a peaceful and secure business environment in Rwanda unlike other countries.

As a token of appreciation to the Rwandan government, which Rwanda Industries credits for having Industry friendly policies, the company aims to venture into many more developmental activities as well as add to the products they produce.

And as Rwanda as a country experiences a wave of industrialization, Rwanda Industries has a pioneer position in the industrial market as well as job creation. One of the few companies that provide skills to Rwandans through experience while they don’t consider skills or experience when choosing employees.

As they work on, Rwanda Industries dreams go beyond earning money, to developing the country that has equipped them with the chance to thrive. Meanwhile, Rwanda Industries products are becoming famous in Rwanda and East Africa though the company still yearns to extend their services as far as they can. Rwanda : Rwandan clothing markets and boutiques

“Brand new clothes also work, but i don’t buy them very often, due to the fact that they produce many of the same kind, and particularly you find that, a lot of people are putting on the same outfit which is the fashionstatement moment of that moment, she says.

Similarly, Janet Uwamahoro, says “It’s amazing to wear an outfit knowing you won’t easily come across, another person putting on the outfit of the same sort. I can buy a trendy outfit which has just hit the fashion board, but immediately it becomes common I give it away or just pack it.”

“Putting on something knowing that you will meet a good number of people having the same outfit creates a feeling of discomfort in me” she says.

Though these clothes are cheap and in variety, the common markets for clothes are not simple places to get around especially that they are packed with many traders, congested and just as busy as a ‘factory’.

That is why those who dare to go buy clothes in a typical African market place for clothes; they have to ‘pay’ for this chaos and havoc where everyone is struggling to win their bargain and earn a living.

The clothe markets have different sections for clothes, whereby if one wants to buy jumpers, shirts or trousers; has to look up for that section. At this point, what remains is one’s bargaining power and one is sure that there is no fixed price. However cheap these clothes get, there is only one thing that you keep in mind- No guarantee for you money or durability of the clothes.

The most first and most popular place where Rwandans buy their clothes is Nyabugogo market – which is the biggest local market-where most of second hand clothes coming in bails from outside the country are ordered- (from Europe, Canada and USA). The second hand clothes that enter Rwanda come with every fashion trends like those made by tailors in Rwanda or around the world.

The second one is  Sar motor market located in Giporoso Remera, an outskirt of Kigali. The market is operated by an association of people who used to be street hawkers – who used wonder about selling their clothes and other merchandise from the streets.

These former street vendor came together rented out a place, so as to help the Rwanda government in the “keep Rwanda clean campaign” by putting an end to street vending.

The third place is in town in places known as quartier commercially 9(Commercial center) and Quartier mateus (trade zone) – all located in the middle of the city. Here you find brand new clothes for the middle class. These shops are more organized and make it easy for window shoppers to look through the trendy fashion on the market. With the help of the prices tags on each of the clothes is visible- making it easy for any buyer to check the wallets and decide on if they want to buy, before entering the shop.

All these areas are ever busy and crowded with people during the day and late evening hours to
This crowdedness is mostly caused by many pedestrian and cloth hawkers who are making some sales along the streets.  At one time street vending for secondhand clothes become so common in Kigali city center, that in most places you would pass and buy these clothes at any spot.an extent that traffic comes to a standstill especially after 6pm.

The government put up the campaign to eliminate vendors as a way of reducing commotion, dirtiness in the city center for health purposes and orderliness.

Apart from the common places, there are places in town such as the UTC building (Union Trade Centre) containing a lot of shops that sell jewelries imported first class clothes (from Paris, USA, China etc) – just for the high class citizens in  Rwandan. Other new spots in Kigali include: Mr. Price, Simba Supermarket and in other top boutiques around the town center. These are expensive, and serve a different class of people but they are also very comfortable places to do shopping and get in touch with more durable fashions and a guarantee for your money.

Rwanda : Child Day Cares in Rwanda

In Rwanda a Child Day Care Centers (Créche) are relatively a new tradition of early childhood development and education. These centers exist in almost all communities in the countryside, and in Kigali city.

Though these centers are very expensive especially in Kigali city, the centers have contributed widely to the education system and it is almost imperative that each parent wants to have the children at the day care centers.

The centers provides a safe and nurturing “home away from home” with an early child education designed to help infants grow and learn every day by exploring and making new discoveries, proved to be an enriching experience for a child.

It offers activities such as, social interactions, and experiences that simply can’t be done in a home environment because of the expense of the materials and the startup time involved.

Although children need a lot of parental care and support as top priority, parents barely spend a lot of hours at home.

It caters for the children from the age 0-3 or up to 4 years old, offering an early child education.

A good centre can help the children not to miss the parents and feel completely left alone.

The dove day care is located in Nyarutarama, Kigali city, it is owned by a Ugandan national.

She decided to put up the centre following unpleasant situations children would grow up, in the absence of their parents. Some of the children did not experience love until under the care of our loving teacher.

“Taking a child to a place where you find scheduled activities for the children each day that, quite honestly, I couldn’t match with a home environment,” said one mum whose child attends Doves Child Care and he often exhibits learning skills that we simply didn’t teach her.

Console Uwimana, a working widow, says my son has largely benefited from Doves centre, he learnt how to speak incredibly fast and his language skills are far better compared to his fellow children. When he is away I worry less knowing that he is in safe hands and well cared for.

“He has been trained to share, love and help others, and stopped wetting his pants etc.”

The headmistress of doves Annet Masaba, says when children come to the centre the first two weeks of molding them requires a lot of attention and effort. “Getting them used to being with other children, away from their parents, siblings and other people they are used to or just their usual environment, is not very easy, but that goes away in just a few days.”

“We provide meals for them starting with breakfast- mid morning snack- lunch- evening snack.”

We have pre class- 18 months to 2 years “at this age we give them oral education including singing, reading them story books, seeing and touching pictures and a few minutes of watching and listening to educational programs on television.

At our centre fees starts range from Rwf300, 000 for full day then which starts from 07:00hrs to 16:00hrs. Then half day starts from 07:00hrs to 12:00hrs- 240, 000.

The next level is kindergarten which starts from the age of 3 to 4. At this point lessons they received in pre- class change, jolly phones (sounds), the alphabetical order, colouring, writing numbers, learning shapes, building in sand, outside play area etc.

At this age we also include Bible lessons- know and fear God, preparing them to love each other for a better and peaceful tomorrow.

At doves children are taught to love each other, when one is hurt or falls a friend comes to lend a helping hand.

Another Child Care Centre is Ecole les Hirondelles de don bosco, located near chez lando, in Kigali city, next to Kobil Filling Station.

It is run by the Catholic Church, headed by a nun Florence Liripa, who is a Congolese national.

Children experiencing bad eating habits, get the courage of eating because from group influence.

Here teachers are devoted to study and learn every child’s behavior- monitoring language of children especially the new comers straight from home- some can even reach the centre with abusive language adopted from the environment surrounding them, especially when a child at one time underwent the care of an abusive and uncaring maid.

At don bosco centre, half day starts from 07:00hrs ending at noon -120 000 and for full day starts from 07:00hrs to 17:00hrs paying school fees of 210, 000frw.

The meals are also provided for and those still using pampers can carry them with them.

These children are trained to fit in the education world at an early age so that, making them to beat those who come straight from home without experiencing kindergarten.

When a child is sick we advise them to stay at their respective homes until they pullout of their disease.

There is a huge a number of child day cares mushrooming in Rwanda due to the rapid development of the country.

Districts Need Decentralization Of Budget For Sectors, Cell Levels

Some of district workers and administrators say that they need decentralization program of the National budget to be brought to the sectors so that districts can get the time to work out on development projects.

This was discussed during the meeting about increasing the work abilities of Ruhango district workers that convened on the 2^nd.July.2012 in Muhanga district.

These workers say that usually projects concerning finance are determined on the district level in the National budget and this is giving district more responsibilities.

Epimaque Twagirimana the vice mayor for finance and economic development in Ruhango district said that if National budget is decentralized, the district would get time to do other things rather than plan for sectors.

“Let’s say if a certain entrepreneur is building schools in a certain sector, the district mayor have to follow up that project on a daily basis and in all sectors that make up a district because the district is the one accounted for in the National budget though the sector only gives a report.

If decentralization is done, the sector would be responsible for all projects done in and the district would have time to work on other developmental projects” Twagirimana explained.

These workers and administrators say that if this program is implemented, the sectors can improve and develop where they work from and develop their residents as they know better what people need because they are near them more than districts.

Decentralization program has three phases and the first one was to ensure good governance by introducing local levels that is province, district, sector, cell and the village.

The 2^nd phase was to bring administration and leadership to local people and giving authority to their nearby local levels where people get to every program and information on a village level.

The 3^rd phase is still under discussion by the Ministry of local governments (MINALOC) so as to decentralize the National budget so that sectors are included for money to come from the ministry directly to the sectors without passing through districts.

Nyanza: Kiruri Awarded For Exceptional Community Work

Abdallah Murenzi the mayor of Nyanza district

Abadallah Murenzi said that this award is worth 1.5Million francs and it will be presented to Kiruri residents by the Ministry of Local Governments (MINALOC).

This award was won after James Musoni the Minister in the Ministry of Local Governments visited Kiruri cell on the 11^Th.June.2012 and found that they have built office buildings of all villages that make up this cell.

James Musonion that day thanked Nyanza district to have managed to build village offices and cows’ kraals with the help of the local residents and their local leaders through community work. Kiruli cell is made up of 11 villages and all of them have office buildings.

Gatsibo: Billions Of Rwandan Francs Approved For 2012-2013 Budget

The advisory council of Gatsibo district has approved the district’s budget for  2012-2013 which is  more than Rwf10 billion to be allocated in projects development including more  infrastructures such as roads, clean water to people, building several market places among others.

Among this budget, there is money worth 2.7million francs to teach illiterate adults in this district who are still many to read and write.

About 50percent of this budget will be used in development projects that will make the district attain development quickly like putting security lights on streets in towns in this district.

The problem of water shortage will be worked on and the allocated funds for it are 85Million francs which will be used to reconstruct water sources like Nyakagezi-Nyarubuye and Bureranyana-Gasange water sources which will increase the number of people with clean and pure water from 60percent.

Gatsibo district increased the budget compared to the one for the last economic year 2011/2012 which was about Rwf8.6 Billion. Among the projects that will be worked on in this budget include building Kabarore Guest House which will be worth Rwf64Million.

“Liberation Means Well Being And Reliable Security”-Defense Minister

During the community work on June 30^th 2012, Minister of Defence General James Kabarebe told Kitazigurwa residents in Rwamagana district that liberation is to have security and welfare among residents.

During community work that local defense joined residents in, Major Kabarebe asserted: “There cannot be liberation when residents are in poverty.”

Ministry of defense reveals that the participation was meant to lay the foundation for the building of phase two 68 exemplary village settlements in Ntebe and Kitazigurwa in Muhazi sector.

65 houses were built in the first phase and more 100 houses will be built in future, remarks Nehemia Uwimana, Rwamagana district mayor.

The beneficiaries are the vulnerable residents through the government program that builds houses for the residents in poor houses.

Among the attendees were Dr. Alivera Mukabaramba, executive secretary in charge of social affairs in the local government, Lt Gen Charles Kayonga and Odette Uwamariya, Governor of Eastern province.
